Village Club

The Village Club is a registered charity, No.233266A.

Serving the Community for over a Century, the Village Club started life in the 1880s as the Kingsclere Coffee and Reading Rooms, a temperance alternative to the eleven village pubs.

For well over a century the club has provided the community of Kingsclere with leisure and learning facilities.  Over the last seven years the building has been comprehensively refurbished and extended to provide additional facilities and to improve access for disabled people.

There are two meeting rooms, one seating up to sixty and the other (the Holding Room) up to twenty five people depending on the activity and a small committee room seating up to ten people.  There is also a large garden with a floodlit stone patio and barbecue and there are high standard catering facilities, with both a kitchen and a beverage servery.  Although licenced, private hirers will have to make their own arrangements for the dispensing of alcholic drinks.  Other facilities include a photographic darkroom and a small computer suite.

The Almshouses Charity

This charity is responsible for ten one-bedroom bungalows and a wardens bungalow at The Durbidges, Galley Lane, Headley.  The bungalows which are set in pleasant grounds are suitable for retired married couples and single people.  A warden is employed by the charity to give general help to the residents and during the times when the warden is off-duty or off-site the alarm system is switched to the Basingstoke Care Line so that in effect there is 24 hour cover for emergencies.

The Browns Bungalows in George Street, Kingsclere are also  part of this charity.  These are four bed-sit dwellings consisting of one bed-sitting room, a small kitchen, a bathroom and toilet.  They are, of course, only suitable for single people.

The Welfare Charity

This charity helps those of all ages who are in need in the Parishes of Kingsclere and Ashford Hill with Headley.  Grants have been given towards the provision of

  • motorised wheelchairs and mobility scooters for the disabled
  • stairlifts and installation costs
  • medical equipment, such as nebulisers
  • various aids to make life easier for the sick and disabled
  • travel costs to and from hospital.

The Robert Higham Charity

This charity is divided into two parts:

(i) The Robert Higham Apprentices Charity
This charity helps students and apprentices from the age of 16-25.  Grants are given towards the purchase of

  • books and materials
  • equipment
  • tools
  • special clothing which is essential to a particular course, such as catering, agriculture and horticulture
  • Assistance is also given with the cost of travel to and from college and University.

The charity has helped many students through 6th form college and on through University as well as plumbing, bricklaying and motor engineering apprentices.

(ii) The Robert Higham Educational Charity
This charity helps Kingsclere Primary School and Ashford Hill Primary School with annual donations of between £1,000-£1,500 to assist with projects which the schools are undertaking and which are not funded by Hampshire County Council.

Club Talk

The Parent Teachers Association of Kingsclere Primary School

To say Fireworks Night went off with a real bang is an understatement!  Once again a very big "thank you" to everyone involved in making this event such a success again by giving their time and expertise over the weekend and in the months prior to the day.

The support for it has grown year-on-year with spectacular firework displays and this year did not disappoint. Without such a wonderful attendance it would not be the success it is so thank you for all of you who came along to join in the celebrations. This year we raised £3,500 and hope with the contribution of V odafone matched funding to better our total from last year. All funds going to support the development of our children at Kingsclere Primary School.

Special thanks go to Swan Street Stores to Wyn and his fantastic team for selling so many tickets and to our sponsors of the evening: Clive Reygers of Soundsalike AV, Abacus Ltd, Alan Abinger Limited, Phil Baker, Mr D Berry, Dynamic Signal Processing Ltd, Mr P Harrap, Howe and Son, Kingsclere Pharmacy, OCME UK Ltd, Phoenix Driving School, PKN Consulting Ltd, Mr G C Randall, Secura Monde International Ltd and Lord LloydWebber.

It is quite incredible how professional the display is considering this is staged by specially trained parents in the village - you could be mistaken for thinking this is run by a professional pyrotechnic company! Thank you to you all: Phil Baker (again!); Barry Porton; Bob Taylor, Gavin Ashton; hin Norris; Jim Newitt; Kevin Gunter; Martin Beaver; Mike Barker, Richard Jacklin; Sean Cleghorn; Steve V oke and Jason Morely.
