Hannington Wine Society

wine bottleYou do not have to know anything about wine to come to the Wine Society meetings, because that is what it is there for!  People learn in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, trying wines that they may not have thought about buying themselves, often because they didn’t know what it was like so stuck with what they always buy!  Members are a friendly bunch and take good care of newcomers.  Members come from the village and also from Ecchinswell, Wolverton Common, Ramsdell, Hook, Basingstoke and Bracknell - word has definitely got around!

The Society meets in the Function Room of the Vine Pub, Hannington at 8 pm on the 2nd Thursday of the month.  If you would like to join and become a member, the subscription is £5 per year, or if you would like to go to a particular meeting please contact Barbara on 01635 298547, or email bmacmurchy@hotmail.com.

grapesThe Society has had a variety of presenters in the past, who have talked and given extremely interesting information about vineyards, grapes, winemakers, countries and brought along some excellent wines to be tasted, which has given everyone a small insight into the very large world of wine.  It has also visited English vineyards and champagne houses in Rheims.

Winter Season 2009-10

We have put together a wide-ranging programme of classic films for the winter months, which we hope you will enjoy. All will benefit from being seen on our large screen, with a glass of wine at hand. Don't forget, you can request a lift if you phone 297221 in advance.

October: Tea with Mussolini (1999/PG)
A semi-biographical film from Zeffirelli, starring Judy Dench, Maggie Smith, Joan Plowright and Cher as a group of eccentric ex-pats in fascist Italy, who 'adopt' a young Italian boy, illegitimate son of a businessman. The film centres on their attempts to stay free of internment.
This film is preceded at 7.00 by the AGM and is free to members.

November: The Constant Gardener (2005/15)
A powerful drama which asks searching questions about the way Western companies treat Africa and Africans. When the wife of a gentle diplomat is brutally murdered, he uncovers an unprincipled conspiracy in which the British government appears to be involved. Gripping and atmospheric.

December: Slumdog Millionaire 2008/15)
The film of 2008! Ultimately heart-warming story of an uneducated teenager from the Mumbai slums who is arrested as he gets close to winning the top prize on the Indian version of 'Who wants to be a millionaire'. The police believe he must be cheating, but all is explained by the events of his life.

January: South Pacific (1958)
Forget the winter outside with this bubbly, light and sunny film, set on a Pacific island as the Americans wait for the invasion. A nurse falls for a French planter who lives on the island. Lots of fun and music

February: A Man for all Seasons (1966/U)
A powerful and beautifully shot film featuring a stunning performance by Paul Schofield as Sir Thomas More, who cannot sanction Henry VIll's divorce from Catherine of Aragon, but even though he resigns as Chancellor, Henry will be satisfied by nothing but for More's agreement.

March: The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
The low budget film which became, through word of mouth alone, one of the world's favourite films. Based on a Stephen King short story, it tells how a young banker, accused of the murder of his wife and her lover, finds enough hope to survive prison brutality. Funning, uplifting and memorable.

Our next meeting is on December 6th at The Village Club.  Starting time 7.30pm.  Please note this is the first Thursday of the month.  Our speaker is Mr Alan Martin from Fareham. His talk is titled "The Botanic Gardens of Jerusalem and Israel".  The competitions for the evening are a dried flower arrangement, a single stem of flower/shrub etc, dish of brussel sprouts, pot plant for Christmas.

Social Evening - As last year we are having a meal at Sandford Springs on Saturday 19th January 2008, 7pm for 7.30pm.  As last year this will be a buffet.  The cost is £18.00 a head.  All members and their guests are welcome.  Please contact Sylvia Pennington to book your place on 01635 298880.

AGM - This will be at the Village Club on Thursday January 10th 2008 at 7.30pm.  There will be cheese and wine after the business with time to mix and chat.

We had a very good turnout for our November meeting, over 40 people present.  As before Carol Watson gave us a very good talk and everyone seemed well pleased with her.  Once again our competition table was well supported with some new competitors joining in, this adds to the enjoyment of the evening.

The group meets at the Village Club, George Street on Sundays at 10am.

Please contact Kathy on 299587 or email kathv@foxhillhouse.net for more details.

Club Talk

Nothing has grown just yet but I'm sure it will all get going next month.  We put up a finger post today and walked the paths to the north of the village. I should have taken my wellies as it was very wet but that is not surprising considering the amount of rain we have had lately - is it an El Nino year?  If so I should get a lovely crop of carrots.
For those of you who are interested here is a list of dates for 2007, not quite the end of the month but I have tried to avoid bank holidays:  April 1st and 29th, June 3rd, July 1st and 29th, September 2nd and 30th, October 28th and November 25th. Strong footware and gloves required.
Feel free to come along.

Club Talk

Rose Hodson Court has been open for 18 years now and a birthday party was held to celebrate!  There have been many changes with new tenants and changes in rules and regulations, but Maureen is still with us.  The Beavers visited us, sang some songs around the camp fire and presented us with a pot that has been planted with spring bulbs.  We look forward to watching them grow.  Sincere thanks to the boys and their leaders.

A Coffee Moming and sale was held, funds raised will go towards a Christmas programme, including lunch at Sandford Springs, a Christmas tea and other events that are planned.  We welcome Bill into Rose Hodson Court and hope he will be very happy in his new home.

I f anyone is willing to continue fund raising for this local cancer charity, please contact Maisie on 298385.  My personal thanks to Molly, relatives and friends who have worked so hard and given so much support over the years.  Without you, we could not have been so successful in fund raising.    Maisie Lawrence

Club Talk

Missing Shield - It is with grateful thanks that we can write and say that the missing shield mentioned last month has been found safe.  It was through some detective work by a lady who works at the school that the shield was found - on top of a cupboard in the school!  Our thanks go to her for searching for it and taking it to Wendy for her to return it to the Branch. Our thanks also go to the gentleman who phoned and offered to pay for a replacement if that one had not turned up.  This was a very kind gesture.

We are now in the process of the Poppy Appeal and when this is published Remembrance Sunday will be over.  We will, through future Tower magazines keep you informed of the amount raised for this very worthwhile cause.  Also we appreciate the support which we receive ftom local organisations on Remembrance Sunday.  It means a great deal to Members to know that the people of Kingsclere take time to remember those who were killed and are still being killed in honour of our country.    Maureen Martin (Secretary)
